Azathioprine or azithromycin?

Please be vigilant with these medicines.  PHARMAC has recently widened access to azithromycin so it is likely there will be an increase in the number of prescriptions in primary care.   There has been confusion in the past with azathioprine, so please be aware of this and take steps to ensure there are no mix-ups.

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic indicated for Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

Azathioprine is an immunosuppressive and antineoplastic agent used to prevent transplant rejection and for other conditions such as Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
