Methotrexate

The Health Quality and Safety Commission (HQSC) have recently sent out guidelines1 for the safe use of methotrexate for Primary Care. This guidance includes the following key points:

  • Prescriptions must specify a day of the week written in full on which the dose is to be taken
  • Consider specifying only 2.5mg tablets to be dispensed
  • In clinical notes and referral letters, specify the required laboratory patient card formethotrexate is enclosed. See the methotrexate Bulletin for the printable Amonitoring and the doctor responsible for follow-up
  • Provide patient information specifying weekly dose, day of the week, storage and handling advice and potential adverse reactions.
